Georgia School Shooter Identified, Will Be Charged as an Adult

Police identified the 14-year-old gunman who opened fire in a Georgia high school, killing four people and wounding nine others.

Police said 14-year-old Colt Gray , a student of Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, is the shooter. He was taken into custody soon after the shooting that killed two students and two teachers, and will be tried as an adult.

“There are four individuals who are deceased from this incident. Nine that have been taken to local hospitals with various injuries. Of those that are deceased, two were students and two were teachers here at the school,” said Chris Hosey , Director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Police were called to respond to an active shooter at the school around 10:23 Wednesday morning. The school was put into lockdown as police and paramedics swarmed the perimeter of the large school that boasts roughly 1,900 students.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) said in a statement he was directing state resources to the school. “I have directed all available state resources to respond to the incident at Apalachee High School and urge all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state,” he wrote. “We will continue to work with local, state, and federal partners as we gather information and further respond to this situation.”

President Joe Biden was briefed on the situation Wednesday morning and released a statement in the afternoon, calling again for Congress to act and pass further gun control measures.

“We must ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines once again, require safe storage of firearms, enact universal background checks, and end immunity for gun manufacturers,” Biden wrote. “These measures will not bring those who were tragically killed today back, but it will help prevent more tragic gun violence from ripping more families apart.”
