ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith ripped police officers who detained Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill Sunday morning outside Hard Rock Stadium.

In a pair of posts to X (formerly Twitter), the ESPN First Take host criticized the officers’ handling of the situation — calling it “excessive” and “totally unneccsary.” Video of the incident from ESPN’s Adam Schefter and others on social media shows Hill being handcuffed on the ground by the officers.

“This story with the police involving [Hill] ain’t going away damnit,” Smith said. “Traffic violation? Fine. But WTH was he face down in cuffs, stood up, then the other officer runs over behind him and forces him to the ground again??? Hell No! Excessive! Wrong! Again, this ain’t going away.”

Smith went on to reference the incident earlier this year involving pro golfer Scottie Scheffler — in which he was arrested outside Valhalla golf club in Louisville, KY .

“This is b.s. Totally unnecessary,” Smith said of the Hill detainment. “And btw…., I know the Scottie Scheffler incident was in [Kentucky] — not Florida — and he was arrested, detained, booked. I also know we don’t know all the details, blah….blah…..blah! But he wasn’t faced down on the ground in cuffs? Then forcibly sat down again by officers a second time. Nah! This story isn’t going away — and it doesn’t need to.”
