Dan Abrams Tells Trump Supporters and Republicans After Debate: ‘When You’re Complaining About the Refs, You Know You’re in Trouble’

NewsNation’s Dan Abrams told Republicans that complaints about Tuesday night’s debate moderators will spell “huge trouble” for former President Donald Trump in November.

In post- debate coverage, Abrams, the founder of Mediaite, acknowledged Trump faced “tougher questions” from the moderators on subjects like the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, but also said objections by conservatives that debate moderators were more biased in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris will not win over any independent voters.

“Look, when you’re complaining about the refs, you know you’re in trouble, no matter what,” Abrams told Chris Cuomo following the debate.

Abrams argued Trump faced “tougher questions,” but that point will matter less to “right-leaning independents” and only sell in the “far-right media universe.” A number of conservatives took to social media on Tuesday to complain ABC News debate moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis were steering the debate Harris’s way by fact-checking and telling Trump to stay on subject more than the vice president.

Abrams argued:

I think it is far to say there were even just tougher questions of Trump. What I mean by that is there was just a series of questions on January 6, election integrity, accepting the results of elections, etc. that just went on and on for a long time. Now, all of these things are important issues, but you can say that with the limited time you have that they could have moved on certain cases, that they shouldn’t have followed up with additional fact checks in certain cases, but as you pointed out earlier — that’s not the make or break issue here.

“If the main narrative from conservatives is going to be that the debate was unfair,” Abrams added, then they have already “lost.”

“If the claim in the spin room from the right is going to be, well, the moderators were unfair, then they’re in huge trouble,” he said. “Then you know they lost.”
