Taylor Swift Gets Political During Acceptance Speech at MTV’s Video Music Awards — And Shouts Out Travis Kelce

The day after she endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris , Taylor Swift urged her fans to “register to vote” while accepting one of her awards at MTV’s Video Music Awards on Wednesday.

Swift took home seven awards , which brought her to a career total of 30, tying her with previous record holder Beyoncé and making both women the most awarded artists in MTV VMAs history. One of Swift’s awards on Wednesday was Video of the Year for “Fortnight,” and during her acceptance speech , she made sure to thank her boyfriend Travis Kelce :

The thing is that this video seems very sad when you watch it, but it actually was, like, the most fun video to make. And something that I’ll always remember is that when I would finish a take and I’d say “Cut,” and we’d be done with that take, I would always just hear, like, someone, like, like cheering and like, “WHOOOOOO” from across the studio where we were shooting it. And that one person was my boyfriend, Travis. [AUDIENCE CHEERS] Everything this man touches turns to happiness and fun and magic. So, I want to thank him for for adding that to our shoot because all of us remember that.

After thanking her fans and the crew that helped make the “Fortnight” video, Swift ended her speech by encouraging everyone to register to vote:

So, thank you to MTV for giving me this opportunity to thank the fans, to thank you for what you’ve done. And the fact that this is a fan-voted award and you voted for this, I appreciate it so much. And if you are over 18, please register to vote for something else that’s very important coming up, the 2024 presidential election.

In the hours after Swift endorsed Harris immediately following the ABC News presidential debate on Tuesday, nearly 338,000 people visited the nonpartisan vote.gov , which Swift included in her Instagram post . In her post, Swift wrote: “I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make.”
