Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has at least one Democrat willing stick her neck out to defend him over his claim that Haitian immigrants are “eating the pets” in Springfield, Ohio.

During his debate with Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday, Trump promoted the online rumor that Haitian immigrants in Springfield were hunting down and devouring residents’ pets.

“In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs. The people that came in. They’re eating the cats. They’re eating — they’re eating the pets of the people that live there. And this is what’s happening in our country,” submitted Trump.

After moderator David Muir noted that there was not evidence to support that claim, Trump doubled down.

“The people on television say my dog was taken and used for food,” he repeated. “The people on television say their dog was eaten by the people that went there.”

The former president and his running mate, Ohio’s own Senator JD Vance , have been mocked mercilessly over their claims in the days since — and even Ohio’s Republican Governor, Mike DeWine , went on national television to say there was “no truth” and “no evidence” to the claims.

But Marianne Williamson , who sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 and then again in 2024, is urging her fellow Democrats to hold their fire because “Haitian voodoo is in fact real.”

“Continuing to dump on Trump because of the ‘eating cats’ issue will create blowback on Nov. 5,” wrote Williamson in a post on X. “Haitian voodoo is in fact real, and to dismiss the story out-of-hand rather than listen to the citizens of Springfield. Ohio confirms in the minds of many voters the stereotype of Democrats as smug elite jerks who think they’re too smart to listen to anyone outside their own silo.”

Over the last four years, Springfield has seen its population increase by more than 20,000, with almost all of that growth being driven by migrants.
