CNN’s Harry Enten Shows Kamala Harris’s ‘Underperformance’ Among Young Voters as Campaign Hopes for Taylor Swift Bump

CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten said Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris is more than welcome by the campaign as there’s been an “underperformance” among young voters.

Enten on Thursday highlighted data from a group of national polls showing that in September 2020 President Joe Biden held a 28 point advantage among voters aged 18-29. In July of this year — before Biden dropped his reelection campaign — the president had a seven point advantage. Cut to September with Harris at the top of the ticket and that spread has moved to a 15 point advantage.

“Kamala Harris will absolutely welcome in the support of Taylor Swift if she can move young voters at all because the bottom line is: Kamala Harris is in fact not doing as well among young voters as you might expect a Democrat to necessarily be doing based upon history,” Enten told CNN’s Kate Bolduan .

One area where Swift could prove to be a real asset, Enten added, is in getting people to register to vote as it’s another area where Democrats are struggling. The data reporter turned to the battleground states of Pennsylvania and North Carolina where voters registering as Democrats has fallen compared to the same time in 2020.

In September of 2020, approximately 560,000 registered as Democrats in Pennsylvania and approximately 415,000 did the same in North Carolina. In September of this year, those numbers have fallen to around 169,000 in Pennsylvania and 128,000 in North Carolina.

“The bottom line is Republicans have been doing a significantly better job of registering voters than Democrats have been doing over the last four years and getting folks to switch over from Democratic registration to Republican registration,” Enten said.

Swift could have a significant impact here though. Following an Instagram post where Swift urged people to register to vote after her endorsement , more than 337,000 people used her link. Swift made another call to register to vote at the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday evening.

“Kamala Harris will definitely welcome the idea if Taylor Swift can bring in some more younger voters, Democratic-leaning voters in the electorate because the bottom line is Republicans have been doing a heck of a lot better job of registering voters than Democrats have over the last four years,” Enten said.
