Supporters at a rally for Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz broke out into “we’re not eating cats” chants to troll a conspiracy theory promoted by former President Donald Trump at Tuesday’s debate.

During a solo visit to Grand Rapids, Michigan, Walz made reference to Trump saying “they’re eating the cats” at the debate and the audience responded by chanting, “we’re not eating cats.” The chant was similar to how supporters had been chanting, “we’re not going back.”

“Ah, Michigan, we love you,” Walz told the crowd.

Trump’s comment was based on a false story being promoted by his campaign claiming that Haitian immigrants in Ohio were kidnapping and eating pets.

“In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs. The people that came in, they’re eating the cats. They’re eating the pets of the people that live there. And this is what’s happening in our country. And it’s a shame,” Trump said.

The moment led to a fact check by debate co-moderator David Muir, who said ABC News had contacted the city manager in Springfield, Ohio and found not credible proof of cats and dogs being kidnapped and eaten.

Walz in Michigan went on to touch on the recent endorsement from “fellow cat owner” Taylor Swift.

“You mess with cat people, and you will find out, you will find out, and they did,” Walz said.

The Democrat sarcastically called it a “beautiful strategy picking on the cat people.”

Swift referred to herself as a “childless cat lady” in her endorsement post, referring to a line deployed Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance.
