Democratic Party activist Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis described former President Donald Trump as “exactly like Hitler” on MSNBC Saturday during an interview with network host Jonathan Capehart.
Capehart did not push back on the comment or one Lewis made that likened the former president and 2024 GOP nominee to another 20th-century fascist dictator – Italy’s Benito Mussolini.
On The Saturday Show with Jonathan Capehart, the host asked Lewis to comment on the Trump campaign’s unfounded accusations that Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio, had been eating pets. Those claims have been debunked.
“It’s horrifying but it’s expected,” Lewis said of the narrative spread by Trump that some migrants in Ohio had been menacing their community by eating dogs and cats. Lewis went on to say that Trump was making an attempt to take America to “Nazi Germany.”
“We exported racism, fascism to Nazi Germany,” she said. “We exported it to South Africa, Jonathan.” Lewis continued:
“Let’s not pretend that Donald Trump isn’t exactly like Mussolini, exactly like Hitler, he is that guy. I want to say – something to the American people. I live in a neighborhood, Jonathan, you and I both have white partners. I live in a nice mixed neighborhood with all kinds of people, including Republican people who are nice people, who shovel your grass, who care about the neighborhood, care about the world, right? You nice people don’t want this guy just because your economy worked better for five minutes under his regime. You nice Christians, kind, loving Jewish people – we’re not these people. We’re not these people. And we’re not going to get what we want if we elect this fascist, authoritarian weasel.
Capehart defended Lewis’s assertion that America exported racism to Europe and other continents in the previous century.
Lewis also went on to categorize Pope Francis as “racist” for equating Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris as similarly “against life” in a Friday comment on the 2024 election.
Francis said, “[Harris and Trump] are against life: the one that throws out migrants and the one that kills children. Both are against life.”
“That is racist, sexist – from the Catholic Church – not surprising,” Lewis said.
Capehart concluded the interview by accepting a “God is queer” bracelet from Lewis and said she was welcome back on his show any time.
“You know you have an open invitation,” he said.
