A day after Ryan Wesley Routh was arrested after his alleged assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump , the Martin County Sheriff’s Office released body cam footage from the moment he was taken into custody.

NewsNation’s Brian Entin posted a video clip on Twitter/X that started immediately before Routh surrendered to police. Routh can be seen toward the end of the video with his shirt over his head and his hands up:

While Trump was golfing at his club in Florida on Sunday, gunshots were heard and were later confirmed to be an exchange between Routh and the Secret Service. The Secret Service noticed a rifle barrel poking out of a chain link fence and approached, causing Routh to run away back to his car. Police caught up with him in his vehicle, which was searched and investigated . Routh left two backpacks, his AK-47 rifle with a scope, and a GoPro camera at the fence.

Trump was safely removed from the scene by the Secret Service.

As of Monday, it is unknown what Routh’s motive was when he opened fire. Records showed that he voted for Trump in 2016, but his social media profiles suggested that his political leanings were all over the map. In 2020, he backed Tulsi Gabbard for president and more recently expressed support for a Vivek Ramaswamy and Nikki Haley joint ticket.
