NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo blasted “partisans on both sides” for weaponizing a recent phone call made to former President Donald Trump but argued Democrats were particularly cruel in their responses.
“Partisans on both sides weaponized it, just as I expected,” Cuomo said of his monologue the previous night, in which he accused media of downplaying an alleged second assassination attempt on Trump following a would-be gunman being arrested in West Palm Beach, Florida while the former president was golfing. This followed Trump being shot at in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Cuomo scoffed at some critics calling the phone call made up and showed examples of right-wing accounts playing up Cuomo saying he offered an apology when he called Trump up. Cuomo previously said he called Trump out of concern for the former president and his family and because he is “ashamed” of how he’s been covered in the media regarding the assassination attempts.
Cuomo noted that conservatives played up the sort of apology as a “sign of weakness.”
Cuomo said:
Here’s the truth. I reached out to Trump to let him know that I think it is shameful and embarrassing and horrifying that he has suffered multiple assassination attempts and that is shameful how limited outrage has been. No matter how toxic I find his words and deeds and I do and he knows I am an outspoken critic, but he also knows I feel for his family and I want him safe and so should you. So why isn’t the truth enough? Because it’s not about the truth in freaky, fringe politics. It’s about advantage, period.
Cuomo said he was more shocked by responses on social media from Trump critics, showing somewhere X users say Trump “deserved” the attacks on him.
“By the way, the right were the nice ones on this. The real reaction I expected came heavy and hard, and it was from the left. Boys and girls, blue checks and big followings and the rest. The main thrust of it? Trump deserves it,” Cuomo said.
These sort of Democrats, he argued, are what President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris need to be distancing themselves from and disowning.
Cuomo:
Democrats, especially Harris, Walz, President Biden, you should disown these people and their ideas. Trump can control his followers in a way I’ve never seen in our politics, but he can’t get these people to see that they are giving into their worst instincts. You have been too quiet on this. Yes, the cliche applies, the silence is deafening. You want to condemn hate speech? Good. You want to condemn demonizing migrants? Good. But where is that same energy when you’re talking about violence against your opponents?
Trump has directly blamed Biden, Harris, and other Democrats and their “rhetoric” for attacks against him, something White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre flatly rejected on Wednesday. Jean-Pierre, in a heated exchange with Fox News’ Peter Doocy, defended calling Trump a “threat” to democracy amid the assassination attempts, arguing it is the truth based on the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and more.
“We have at the same time denounced political violence over and over, denounced political rhetoric over and over and over again,” she said.
