Trump Supporter at Town Hall Pushes Debunked Claim That Children Are ‘Terrified’ in School Because of ‘Litter Boxes in the Bathrooms’

A supporter of Donald Trump repeated a long-debunked claim on TV that children are “terrified” by schools putting litter boxes in bathrooms.

Trump on Tuesday hosted a town hall in Flint, Michigan, with Arkansas Gov. Sarah Sanders. Outside the venue, a woman told RSBN why she believes the former president is needed back in the White House.

“Can’t even protect them at school,” the woman said. “Everybody’s against you. These kids are terrified. They have more put into litter boxes in the bathrooms and everything else, instead of teaching our kids. We have no future without our children, and we need to protect them.”

The woman was referencing a years-old — and inaccurate — conservative talking point. In 2022, at least 20 different Republican politicians claimed that schools were putting litter boxes in bathrooms for children who choose to identify as cats. At the time, it was the latest argument against being inclusive of gender identity.

Those claims, however, turned out to be dubious. In an October 2022 report from NBC News, the outlet contacted got statements from every school district named by the politicians. According to their statements, there was no evidence that litter boxes were being placed in any of the school bathroom facilities.

Despite it being debunked — much like the rumor that Haitian immigrants in Ohio are stealing and eating pets in Ohio — the claim continues to be pushed.
