House Republican Attempts to Strike Democrat’s Claim ‘Certain White Folks’ Fear ‘Martin Luther King’s Dream’ from Record

Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) sought to have the words of Rep. Sean Casten (D-Ill) struck from the record following his pointed remarks on race and climate policy in a tense exchange erupted on the House floor Wednesday.

Casten, speaking during a debate on anti-ESG laws, concerning the environmental and social accountability for private companies, took aim at GOP lawmakers and their support of the Protecting Americans’ Investments from Woke Policies Act. He emphasized the importance of addressing climate change and criticized what he described as resistance to progress.

He said: “Madam Speaker, I get it, competition is hard. It’s scary. Climate change is real. And no matter how nightmarish certain white folks of low character might find the realization of Martin Luther King’s dream, it is the only way we move forward as a society.”

The remark drew an immediate objection from Foxx, who requested that Casten’s words be removed from the official record.

“On what basis?” Casten retorted.

Foxx did not immediately clarify her reasoning but soon after withdrew her demand. Casten responded by clarifying that his comments were not directed at anyone in the chamber, saying he hoped his “plain text remarks” had made that clear.

The debate highlighted ongoing tensions in Congress over climate policy and broader social issues, with lawmakers divided over how to address both.
