Marjorie Taylor Greene Rips Mike Johnson Over Spending, Says He’s ‘Lost The Respect’ of House Republicans

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) told former Rep. Dave Brat (R-VA) that Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has “lost the respect” of House Republicans while on Steve Bannon’s War Room podcast over the weekend.

Brat was guest-hosting for Bannon, who is still in jail, and asked Greene about whether or not Speaker Johnson has the ability to get House Republicans behind his efforts to avert a government shutdown.

“Well, he has immense power, but this is a different situation. The speaker has lost the respect of the conference and it’s not out there in the public for everyone to see because we’re trying to hold it together and we’re trying to win on November 5th,” Greene replied, adding:

But it’s a lot different on the inside than it appears on the outside, Dave. And yes, typically the speaker has tremendous power to wield over his members and can get members to vote a certain way.

Greene is not the only GOP House member to voice frustration at Speaker Johnson in recent days as he plans to move ahead with a short-term funding bill, untethered to the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act – which former President Donald Trump said must pass for the GOP to keep the government open.

“It’s disappointing,” Rep. Warren Davidson (R-Ohio) told the Hill Monday about Johnson moving forward with a stopgap. “But unfortunately the surrender caucus came together to make sure we keep the status-quo plays going.” The Hill added of its conversation with Davidson:

When asked about repercussions on the postelection leadership races, however, Davidson held his fire, opting to wait and see how the ongoing funding fight and November elections pan out.

“We’ll see how it goes,” the Ohio Republican said. “We’re focused on making sure we grow our majority, and I wish we had a better way to keep the government functioning where we could get some sort of win, but we couldn’t get that play across the finish line.”

Greene and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) tried to oust Speaker Johnson over government funding, including funds for Ukraine and Israel.
