Biden Holds Firm When Asked About Trump Blaming Assassination Attempts on His Rhetoric: ‘He Really Does Not Believe in Democracy!’

President Joe Biden accused former President Donald Trump of not believing in democracy in response to the Republican nominee’s shock accusation that it was the president’s rhetoric that inspired the two assassination attempts against him.

The president appeared on The View on Wednesday when host Joy Behar began discussing Trump’s own rhetoric.

Behar started: “Let’s go down memory lane for a second because Trump started his political campaign by calling Mexicans rapists. Remember that?”

    “I sure do,” Biden replied.

The host continued: “He still jokes about Paul Pelosi nearly being beaten to death. He thinks that’s funny. Let’s see what else, he hinted that the Second Amendment people could do something against Hillary Clinton, and he’s calling for a televised military tribunal for Liz Cheney. These are his past statements and ideas.”

Pivoting to her question she asked: “But now he’s blaming rhetoric from you that you inspired these two assassination attempts. After all of the calls for violence, you know, take them out, you know what it is, don’t you think that that is just unbelievable and what do you say to that?”

Careful in his response, Biden paused and drew laughter from the studio audience as he replied: “Well, I think he is the most unusual president.”

He said: “Look, when I ran, one of the first major speeches I made was for Independence Hall about democracy. That democracy was at stake.”

“And to restore the soul of the country,” co-host Sunny Hostin said.

Biden continued: “I’ve ran for three reasons, I said I wanted to restore the soul of the country and a sense of decency and honor. Secondly, I wanted to make the middle class grow because when it grows everybody grows. And thirdly, I wanted to bring the country back together and I was told we couldn’t do any of those things. But we’ve gotten a lot of them done. And, look, Trump is a…”

    Behar joked: “Careful.”

Pausing, Biden said: “He doesn’t have a lot of social redeeming value.”

    The audience applauded. Biden continued:

But here’s the thing, he really does not believe in democracy and the guardrails that our system has set up for the abuse of power. And look at what he does and what he says. Look what he did. January 6th was absolutely bizarre, bizarre. On January 6th, I was sitting in my office waiting to get ready to be sworn in, and I was going to make a speech on another subject, and I went out and I made a speech on democracy. I made a speech on why this is ridiculous, why this cannot stand.

Notably, authorities have yet to establish a motive for the first assassination attempt against Trump in July and the latter attempt, in which the gunman did not fire his weapon, the suspect was a disgruntled former Trump voter.
