‘You Have Called Trump A Racist!’ 60 Minutes Asks Kamala Harris How To ‘Bridge The Gap’ With Trump Supporters

CBS News correspondent Bill Whitaker asked Vice President Kamala Harris how she can “bridge the gap” with supporters of former President Donald Trump after she has “called him a racist.”

Trump has faced accusations of racism for decades , escalating during his political career from the time he kicked off his 2016 campaign by declaring of Mexican immigrants “They’re rapists” right up to Monday when he decried the “bad genes” of migrants, and many times in between . He has even directly and repeatedly attacked Harris over her race , claiming she wasn’t Black until she suddenly “turned Black” one day.

On Monday night’s edition of CBS News’s 60 Minutes , Whitaker rolled out his full interview with VP Harris, during which Harris was asked questions on a variety of issues including immigration, Israel , the economy , and what kind of gun she owns.

The issue of race came up when Whitaker ticked through a laundry list of times “you have accused” Trump of racism, then repeatedly asked how she can connect with his “millions and millions” of supporters after she called him “racist and divisive”:

Bill Whitaker: You have accused Donald Trump of using racist tropes when it comes to Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, when it comes to birtherism, when it comes to Charlottesville. In fact, you have called (Trump) a racist and divisive!

Yet Donald Trump has the support of millions and millions of Americans. How do you explain that?

Vice President Kamala Harris: I am glad you’re pointing these comments out that he has made, that have resulted in a response by most reasonable people to say, “It’s just wrong. It’s just wrong.”

Bill Whitaker: With so many people supporting Donald Trump, a man you have called a racist. How do you bridge that seemingly unbridgeable gap?

Vice President Kamala Harris: I believe that the people of America want a leader who’s not tryin’ to divide us and demean. I believe that the American people recognize that the true measure of the strength of a leader is not based on who you beat down, it’s based on who you lift up.
