Michael Strahan Confronts Tim Walz Over Harris Campaign’s Clean Up of His Call to Get Rid of the Electoral College

ABC’s Michael Strahan confronted Minnesota Governor and Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz over the Harris campaign’s clean up of his recent call for the abolishment of the Electoral College in an interview on Friday morning.

“I want to go back to something you said on Tuesday, you said, ‘I think all of us know the Electoral College needs to go.’ But the campaign came out later that night and they said that’s not their stance,” observed Strahan during his sit-down with Walz on Good Morning America .

“Well, it’s not the campaign’s position. And the point I’m trying to make is, is that there’s folks that feel every vote must count in every state. And I think the sense some folks feel that’s not the case. And our campaign does that,” replied Walz. “And the point I’m saying is, I’m in five states in two days, we’re out there making the case that the campaign’s position is clear, that that’s not their position. Their position and my position is, is to make sure that everybody understands their vote, no matter what state they’re in, matters.”

“So that’s something that you and Vice President Harris disagree on?” inquired Strahan in a follow-up.

“I have spoken about it in the past, and she’s been very clear on this and the campaign. and my position is the campaign’s position,” answered Walz.

At a fundraiser on Tuesday, Walz made the case for a “national popular vote,” before being quickly rebuked by the campaign he represents.

In a statement, a campaign spokesperson told CBS News that the campaign does not want to get rid of the Electoral College and that Walz, “believes that every vote matters in the Electoral College and he is honored to be traveling the country and battleground states working to earn support for the Harris-Walz ticket.”

“He was commenting to a crowd of strong supporters about how the campaign is built to win 270 electoral votes. And, he was thanking them for their support that is helping fund those efforts,” added the campaign official.
