Now that retired NFL quarterback Tom Brady is part of the Las Vegas Raiders’s ownership group, he’s subject to some severe restrictions as a broadcaster.

Brady on Tuesday was unanimously approved to become a part-owner of the Raiders. He now owns a 5% stake in the team. The 47-year-old had been open about his desire to get into team ownership since his retirement at the end of the 2022 season.

Just a few weeks ago, however, Brady also began his post-playing career in Fox’s broadcast booth. To account for possible conflicts of interest. The NFL establishing a set of rules to which Brady must adhere.

These Brady rules — not to be confused with the infamous “tuck rule” from the 2001 playoffs — were first revealed during league meetings in August . They are as follows:

    • Brady is not permitted to be in another team’s facility.
    • He is not permitted to witness practice.
    • He is not permitted to attend broadcast production meetings.
    • He is prohibited from publicly criticizing game officials and other clubs.
    • He is subject to the league’s gambling policy.
    • He is subject to the league’s anti-tampering policies.

There is some wiggle room with of those restrictions though. Brady can still disagree with a call on air, but he is “subject to fines or even a suspension if he goes too far.” Additionally, his communication with members of other teams must be “strictly social” to avoid going against tampering policies.

As noted in ESPN’s report, the rules will still significantly hinder his role as a broadcaster. Because he won’t attend broadcast production meetings — which allows the crew to interview coaches and players before the game — he’ll miss out on valuable context that announcers relay to viewers during the game.
