CNN’s Harry Enten Says Harris Momentum Has ‘Stalled’ While Trump ‘More Popular’ Than Previous Elections

CNN senior political data reporter Harry Enten argued on Friday voters are likely to see a lot of more attack ads from Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign in the coming days as her “momentum” has “stalled” while former President Donald Trump is in the midst of the rise in popularity compared to 2016 and 2020.

Enten joined anchor Kate Bolduan on Friday to discuss the latest polls on the presidential race and reported that while Harris remains overall more popular than Trump that will will not be enough to win the election.

“Joe Biden was more popular than Trump, much more, and he barely won, and Hillary Clinton was more popular than Donald Trump and lost. Being more popular than Trump isn’t enough,” Enten explained.

He noted that Trump’s net favorability remains in the negative, but the average is much better today than at the same points in the 2020 and 2016 elections.

“If you believe he has somehow become less popular over time, let me change your mind about that. In fact, he is more popular at this point in the campaign than he was at this point in the 2020 campaign or the 2016 campaign,” he said.

According to Enten, Trump’s net favorability has gone from -27 in 2016 to -9 today.

Harris’s “momentum,” he reported, has meanwhile “stalled out.”

“Kamala Harris is more popular than Donald Trump, but Kamala Harris had her popularity rising once she became the presumptive Democratic nominee,” Enten said.

In July, Harris’s net favorability was -17 and it steadily moved to a +1 in September only to then fall back down to -1 in October.

“I think there’s this real question in. Kamala Harris’s mind, in the campaign’s mind: why is Trump more popular now than he was at this point in 2020 and 2016?” Enten said. “And I think that is why you’re seeing the sharpening of attacks because they want to put him back down to here.”
