Former President Donald Trump has attempted to whitewash the events of January 6, 2021 by calling it a “day of love” with protestors who came to the Capitol “peacefully and patriotically.” One of the police officers who was there had a different perspective of events.

During his town hall event with Univision on Wednesday, a voter who told Trump that he had lost his support due to his “inaction” during the insurrection asked the ex-president to explain himself and maybe win back his vote.

    Trump’s response:

Very importantly, you had hundreds of thousands of people come to Washington. They didn’t come because of me, they came because of the election. They thought the election was a rigged election and that’s why they came. Some of those people went down to the Capitol. I said, “peacefully and patriotically,” nothing done wrong. At all. Nothing done wrong. And action was taken, strong action. Ashli Babbitt was killed, nobody was killed, there were no guns down there, we didn’t have guns. The others had guns, but we didn’t have guns , and when I say “we,” these are people that walked down, this was a tiny percentage of the overall.

He ended his “explanation” by saying: “But that was a day of love from the standpoint of the millions – it’s like hundreds of thousands, could’ve been the largest group I’ve spoken before.”

Staff Sergeant Aquilino Gonell was at the Capitol that day, in the midst of those “peaceful” protestors, and he had body cam footage from his experience that he posted on Twitter/X , describing it as: “Here’s me receiving an outpouring amount of affection during the ‘day of love’.”

In a follow-up tweet , Gonell said: “They almost loved me to death.”

Here’s another angle from a different police body camera from the “day of love”:

Here’s some love being directed towards members of Congress inside the Capitol building:

And here is some video of “peaceful” protestors threatening the life of then-Vice President Mike Pence and chanting (lovingly!) “Hang Mike Pence!”

While speaking on the “day of love,” Trump told a crowd gathered at the Capitol before the rioting began: “We fight, fight like hell, and if you don’t fight, we don’t have a country anymore.”

Trump may not remember what happened that day because of his dementia. That is the only excuse I can think of why he would call it a day of love, considering how violent and destructive it was.

To all those that were protecting our Capitol, thank you. You were not in a “day of love” and you are loved for your efforts to care and save our Capitol and the people within.
