’60 Minutes’ Breaks Silence, Issues Statement On Claims of ‘Deceitful Editing’ of Kamala Harris Interview After Trump Subpoena Threat

CBS News program 60 Minutes put out a statement Sunday on the accusation made by former president Donald Trump that there was “deceitful editing” of an interview with Vice President Kamala Harris, denying his claims.

Harris sat down with 60 Minutes on October 7, and after the network put out a series of clips and teases featuring questions from Bill Whitaker along with answers from the Vice President – but not always the same answer.

Trump has been making a wide variety of threats based on the appearance of those clips, including on Sunday’s MediaBuzz with Howard Kurtz on Fox News, where the GOP nominee continued to suggest the network should lose its FCC license.

The disparate answers in response to two different questions related to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu became a subject of multiple news articles. Fact-checking website Snopes, for example, said of the controversy: “In our research, we found that CBS News did broadcast two different versions of Harris’ answers to a series of questions she was asked about Netanyahu.”

    The AP noted:

On “60 Minutes,” Harris’ answer was brief: “The work that we do diplomatically with the leadership of Israel is an ongoing pursuit around making clear our principles.”

Yet on “Face the Nation,” Harris was shown giving an answer that lasted a full minute — and did not even include the quote that was used on “60 Minutes” the next night.

Buy 60 Minutes did not release a statement until today, after Trump’s appearance on Fox News. They released it a few hours later, via social media.

The statement, included in full after the below tweet, says Trump’s claims of “deceitful editing” are “false” and that it was just simple editing for time and succinctness.

It also scolded Trump for not having accepted their invitation to sit down for an interview – a criticism Harris, too, has faced from many outlets over her time as the nominee.

Former President Donald Trump is accusing 60 Minutes of deceitful editing of our Oct. 7 interview with Vice President Kamala Harris. That is false.

60 Minutes gave an excerpt of our interview to Face the Nation that used a longer section of her answer than that on 60 Minutes. Same question. Same answer. But a different portion of the response. When we edit any interview, whether a politician, an athlete, or movie star, we strive to be clear, accurate and on point. The portion of her answer on 60 Minutes was more succinct, which allows time for other subjects in a wide ranging 21-minute-long segment.

Remember, Mr. Trump pulled out of his interview with 60 Minutes and the vice president participated.

Our long-standing invitation to former President Trump remains open. If he would like to discuss the issues facing the nation and the Harris interview, we would be happy to have him on 60 Minutes.

Neither Harris nor Trump had issued any further comment on the statement at the time this article was published.

That's OK. We all know the truth. Why would you want to do an interview with a company that treats you like shit, interrupts you, and falsely fact checks you while throwing softball questions to your opponent and accepting everything they say as fact?
