A woman is dead after an officer-involved shooting outside the Medina County Sheriff's Office Wednesday evening, according to a news release from the Medina Police Department.

Chief of Police Edward Kinney said at around 6 p.m., a person used the external building intercom to notify the sheriff's office that a woman in the parking lot was "creating a disturbance" and had a gun.

Deputies responded to the front area of the building, the news release said, and discovered a woman with a firearm and knife.

The deputies ordered her to drop the weapons. When she failed to comply, one officer fired his weapon at her, the news release said. She died from her injuries.

The investigation was turned over to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Medina Police Department.

The police department is not identifying the woman until her family is notified.
