Thea Ky has over 25 years of experience in cosmetology, so the chance to take over a rebrand of Kalla Lily Salon and Spa in Medina was an opportunity she couldn’t pass up. She began her career when she lived in Cambodia, then she moved to the United States to expand her passion.

She went to the Aveda Arts and Sciences Institute in Minneapolis and then worked in different cities such as Inver Grove Heights and St. Paul. Thea Ky acquired and rebranded the business to Tera Salon and Spa last fall, which is located at 325 Clydesdale Trail #300.

Kalla Lily Salon and Spa opened in 2014, and many of the staff members who worked there are still are still there today. The name Tera Salon and Spa was chosen because it’s pronounced similarly to Thea and her husband T Ky’s youngest daughter’s name and also means earth.

T Ky helps out behind the scenes with the website, software, scheduling, bookkeeping and much more. Tera Salon and Spa has four hair stylists out of the six on staff who were with Kalla Lily Salon and Spa before it was sold.

“Our massage therapist [is] still here with us and that’s the same thing with our management team, Julie is still here. Then Stephanie, she just started recently with our marketing,” Thea Ky said.

Stephanie Lanterman handles aspects to do with social media, marketing and advertising and Julie Skogrand is a part of the management team. Tera Salon and Spa offers a variety of services including haircuts, hair color, hair treatments, facials, deep and Swedish massages, waxing, lash lifts and tints and more.

The business is a hybrid salon which means that staff members can be independent or paid on commission. Tera Salon and Spa also offers booth rentals, so that beauty professionals can utilize a space at the salon and spa and have the flexibility to determine their own work schedule and the pricing of the services they offer to clients.

With business booming, Tera Salon and Spa is looking for more hair stylists with many clients booking appointments for hair-related services such as haircuts or hair coloring. Tera Salon and Spa recently held a grand opening event on June 2, which was delayed since the businesses rebranding in the fall so that they could have signage on the building during the event.

After dealing with shortages and other issues, the sign was finally on display starting in April. The logo on the signage was designed by the Ky’s youngest daughter.

During the grand opening event, new team members were able to introduce themselves to the Medina community and those who are new to Medina were able to see Tera Salon and Spa for the first time. Community members, friends and family of Tera Salon and Spa staff, along with the former owner of the salon and spa, attended the grand opening.

Attendees were able to tour the salon and spa, grab some snacks and beverages, enter into drawings offering free services from specific stylists and have the chance to win Bumble and Bumble and Pureology product baskets, receive a discount and see hot tool style demonstrations. The product baskets contained some of the brands Tera Salon and Spa sells in-store.

“We have Bumble [and] Bumble, we have Aveda, we have Pureology, we have Olaplex, then Moroccanoil. The skincare is Eminence,” Thea Ky said.
