THEATER REVIEW: “MJ the Musical” @ Playhouse Square by Roy Berko
Confession: I am not a big fan of jukebox musicals, the now popular Broadway vehicle which is a genre of musical theater in which pre-written songs are woven, mostly with no real reason, into an often soap opera-like story. Reality: MJ, now on stage at the Key Bank State Theatre...

Numbers Band Makes Their Annual Appearance at Akron Art Museum’s Downtown @ Dusk
Thu 7/25 @ 6:30-8PM Kent’s Numbers Band, which debuted in the summer of 1970, has plugged on without a break ever since, is one of northeast Ohio’s musical treasures. Fronted by intense, charismatic singer/songwriter/guitarist Robert Kidney, the band has forged its own distinctive sound out of rock and roll, blues and jazz. While clearly there’ve been many personnel changes in a band with such a long history, Bob’s multi-instrumentalist brother jack Kidney and sax/keyboards player Terry Hynde have been along for a significant chunk of the ride. The current band also features two more local music scene veterans: bassist Bill Watson and drummer Clint Alguire.

Five years after Gov. Mike DeWine signed House Bill 6 into law, Ohio citizens and ratepayers are still paying the price. Ohio lawmakers still haven’t taken steps to repeal the rest of the nuclear and coal bailout bill, which is the focus of what prosecutors say was a roughly $60 million bribery scheme by utility FirstEnergy and its affiliates. Cases continue to wind through the courts, and two men implicated in the scandal have apparently taken their own lives.
