After a tumultuous selection process, the Garfield County Libraries board has a new trustee from Rifle
The Garfield County commissioners unanimously voted this week to appoint Myrna Fletchall of Rifle to the Garfield County Public Library District’s (GCPLD) board of trustees. The board is the library district’s governing body. Its members make decisions about the budget, building maintenance, raising funds, hiring and firing the library district director, and uphold the library’s policies, especially those surrounding the First Amendment and the free access to information for all.
Friday letters: Electric vehicles, Rotary thanks, library board appointee congratulations
I’ve put a lot of thought into this and I’ve been a scientist and science teacher for 30+ years. Electric vehicles are much better for the environment and are much cheaper to operate than internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. The main reason is their energy efficiency. There is a motor on each wheel that regenerates the battery when you slow down or go downhill. This allows the electric car to efficiently use the charge to get you from point A to point B.

Employees in the Steamboat Springs School District are getting a raise, after approval of a new compensation package from the Board of Education. Current certified staff receives an increase in salary ranging from 9.4% to 15.3%. The baseline pay for a new, certified staff with a bachelor’s degree will be $53,500. Returning classified staff gets an increase of $4 per hour, up to $24 per hour. That’s an 18.5% increase in wages.

On May 10, Garfield County Sheriff’s Office arrested John Michael Worley for the suspected murder of Wayne Moore. Moore was discovered bleeding and unresponsive in his car on May 11, 2021. Over the past three years, investigators conducted dozens of witness interviews, multiple search warrants and the analyzing of physical evidence, identifying Worley, a 30-year-old man from Parachute, as the primary suspect. All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Second Annual National Police Week Flag Ceremony to commence bright and early next Monday
A news release from the Rifle Police Department announced the Second Annual National Police Week Flag Ceremony will be proudly put on by the Colorado River Fire Rescue, Garfield County Sheriff’s Department and the Rifle Police Department. It will take place next week to honor the brave service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Garfield County sees two drownings in 6 days
Two people have drowned in state parks within Garfield County in the span of six days, according to a news release from the Garfield County Coroner’s office. The first incident occurred May 12, when 26-year-old New Castle resident Diego Gutierrez Caraveo was reported missing while paddleboarding at Rifle Gap State Park.
Coal Ridge teams shine at Western Slope League Championships
Garfield County track and field athletes made their way to Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction on Friday in hopes of positioning themselves for a spot to make it to the state championships. Coal Ridge High School claimed dual victories as both the women’s and men’s teams took first place in their respective 3A divisions. The women’s team secured a dominant win with 202 points across 19 events, while the Coal Ridge men won with a score of 142 points. The Rifle men’s team placed third with 106 points.
Cottonwood Pass road between Eagle and Garfield counties is now open for the season
Cottonwood Pass in Eagle County, which runs from Gypsum to the Roaring Fork Valley, opened Monday. It will remain open through the fall, conditions permitting. Work continues this week on Hwy 40/Lincoln Ave. in downtown Steamboat Springs and there will be delays, but those should end in time for Memorial Day weekend. Lincoln Ave. eastbound between 3rd and 4th will be down to one lane today, to saw cut for Monday’s concrete work. Project Manager Cole rising says there is rain in the forecast so plans may change. They’re hoping NOT to have a lane closed during rush hour for eastbound traffic on Tuesday or Wednesday, but if the concrete on Monday is not at strength, then the lane will have to stay closed.
