Officials warn the public to recreate safely outdoors this holiday weekend
With Memorial Day Weekend marking the unofficial start to summer, officials are reminding the public to be safe when they head outdoors to recreate. For Colorado Parks and Wildlife, water safety is a big part of that. Recently, in Garfield County, there were two deaths caused by drowning at state parks in a single week. On May 12, New Castle resident Diego Gutierrez Caraveo, 26, drowned after falling off a paddle board at Rifle Gap State Park. A week later, on May 19, Kelvin Velis Rivera, 28, of Rifle drowned after falling off a paddle board at Harvey Gap State Park. Neither man was wearing a life preserver, according to officials.

Garfield County athletes earn multiple top-ten finishes at track and field championships, Rifle’s Weisbrod brings home gold
Athletes from the Colorado River and Roaring Fork valleys delivered multiple top-ten finishes at the Colorado State Track and Field Championships held at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood last weekend. Among the top ten finishers was Rifle’s Lilly Weisbrod, who secured a first place finish in the girls high jump to capture gold.

SILT, Colo. — One person is dead after they became separated from their paddleboard group Saturday at Harvey Gap State Park. Witnesses said four paddleboarders were caught in high winds while on Grass Valley Reservoir at the park, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW). All of the paddleboarders were reported to not be wearing life jackets, CPW said.
2 arrested after illegal fireworks cause wildland fire, meth found in home
Garfield County Sheriff's Office says one person was taken into custody after illegal fireworks caused a brush fire, leading to officers executing a search warrant and finding meth. The sheriff's office says, on Friday around noon, deputies and the Grand Valley Fire Protection District responded to a brush fire in the area of Lodgepole Circle in Battlement Mesa.Approximately one acre of brush and grass were on fire, which led to fences destroyed and several houses being in danger. Deputies and fire crews were able to put the fire out swiftly. After the fire was extinguished, deputies investigated the incident and realized the fire was ignited by illegal fireworks, which led to a search warrant being executed on the home. Deputies searched the home and discovered illegal fireworks and 16.7 grams of methamphetamine. The sheriff's office says two people were taken into custody on multiple charges, which includes fourth-degree arson and possession of a schedule II controlled substance.

PARACHUTE, Colo. (KKTV) - After going three years unsolved, deputies in western Colorado say they have made an arrest in a murder case. Wayne Moore, who lived in his vehicle in and around the Western Slope town of Parachute, was found dead in his car along Highway 6 on May 11, 2021. He had been shot several times, and the case was swiftly ruled a homicide. But for the next 36 months, there was no definitive suspect.
