<body><div><img src="https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?type=thumbnail_580x000&amp;url=3kVzxS_0lUefMhb00" alt="https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=3kVzxS_0lUefMhb00" width="660" height="371" >Last year, the Eau Gallie Commodores finished their season with a record of 14-12.This year they are on already pace to surpass that win total considering their 11-4 record with 10 more games to play in the regular season.The team is also undefeated against district opponents and had a seven-game win streak from March 1-17.<nbtemplate data-id="AdPlaceholder" data-content="JTdCJTdE"></nbtemplate>Here's a look at how they are getting it done.<h2>No Seniors, no problem</h2>When looking at Eau Gallie's roster you may notice the team has zero seniors.It's something the Commodore softball team has a lot of pride in."We've really stepped up as juniors," catcher Sarah Langlie said. "We try to step up since we don't have any seniors. Try to set the tradition that our seniors have set for us and then once we become seniors, we try to continue those traditions that we have set."The underclassmen have shown they can knock in runs early in their high school careers.Sophomore shortstop Deborah Turko leads the teams in RBIs with 11. She also has 12 hits and 11 runs.Langlie is next on the team with nine RBIs, followed by freshmen Isabel Gambill, who has seven.<nbtemplate data-id="AdPlaceholder" data-content="JTdCJTdE"></nbtemplate>While the team may be young, Turko knows this team has a chance to be successful not only now, but in the future."We have a very great bond and we bonded really quick as a team," Turko said. "It's going to stay like that for a long time."<h2>Base running and bunts</h2>When you watch the Commodores play, you notice they do they small things well. Those small things have proven essential in the way they win games.When they approach the plate their mindset isn't always swinging for the fences, sometimes their plan is to just get on base."We are very versatile as a whole team," Turko said. "We all can lay a bunt down when needed and move runners into scoring position so when our big hitters come up, they can do their job."<nbtemplate data-id="AdPlaceholder" data-content="JTdCJTdE"></nbtemplate>The Commodores are also not afraid to steal a bases with Sara Walsh leading the team with six stolen bases.Though bunting and smart base running may not always show up big in stats, head coach Gabriel Caride said members of the team know the importance of playing small ball."I think they understand that it is a part of the game. Sacrificing for each other and for the well-being and benefit of the team," Caride said. "As long as they trust each other, they sacrifice themselves, lay down the bunts and they move the runners over for the next batter behind them to get a good hit or score them, that's all that matters to us."<h2>Game planning on the mound</h2>Last season, Heather Rue struck out 157 batters and carried the pitching responsibilities for the Commodores. This year she leads the team on the mound with 34 strikeouts.<nbtemplate data-id="AdPlaceholder" data-content="JTdCJTdE"></nbtemplate>Langlie has been catching for Rue since they were in middle school, so their chemistry has been building for a while and proves to be large benefit to the team."We talk about what pitches work and then we work on a lot of location, trying to hit the corners," Langlie said. "It's years over years. I've caught her for years so it's just we're used to each other, so it's a lot easier."While Rue will be the team's ace yet again this season, Caride is also confident in the young freshmen pitchers on the team as well. Those freshmen being Gambel and Jordan Stout, who has 11 strikeouts this season."Heather is by far one of the best pitchers around and I would say not just Brevard County, but in the state," Caride said. "But we have two solid freshmen pitchers to back her up.
