LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)– Governor Gretchen Whitmer ordered flags in Michigan and across the country to be lowered at half-staff today in memory of Melvindale police officer Mohamed Said.

Officer Mohamed Said, 23, was shot and killed in the line of duty this past Sunday and will be laid to rest in Wayne County.

“Officer Mohamed Said was a pillar of his community who embodied what it means to be a public servant,” said Governor Whitmer.

“Both in and out of uniform, he was always willing to help anyone and worked hard to keep the people he loved most safe. My heart is with his family, friends, fellow officers, and loved ones today. Together, let`s remember his record of service and carry on his legacy of kindness in Melvindale and across Michigan.”

Michael Lopez, 44, was arrested for the shooting death of Officer Said and he was arraigned yesterday and charged with the murder of a peace officer.

Lopez will face another court hearing in August.
