MELVINDALE (WWJ) Michigan State Police and other law enforcement agencies are honoring the memory of fallen Melvindale Police officer, Mohamed Said, while brightening the day of a little boy, who lost his bike to the murder suspect, and his siblings.

“After murdering Corporal Said, the suspect ran two blocks and stole a bike from a backyard,” State Police said in a statement on X.

Detectives, troopers and members of the forensic laboratory team learned of the little boy who was now “missing his bike,” State Police said.

The law enforcement agencies started a collection to replace the child’s bike, and to give a brand new bike to all of the children in the family.

Dunham's Sports donated two of the four bikes, leaving money to spare for Corporal Said’s Memorial Fund.

Officer Mohamed Said, affectionately called 'Mo', was shot and killed in the line of duty on Sunday (7/21) near the intersection of Oakwood and Dix.

In a post on Facebook , Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin described Said as “a kind soul who proudly served the residents of Melvindale.”

Hamtramck City Councilman Khalil Refai remembered his friend of more than ten years as “always respectful” and “determined to make a difference.”

Born and raised in Melvindale, Said was only 23 years old and had graduated from the police academy last year.

“Every night, before his shift, he drove by his parent’s house knowing that he’s doing it to protect his family and the residents here,” Police Chief Robert Kennaley said.

He was the third Michigan police officer to be killed in the line of duty in the past month.

As for the bicycles, Michigan State Police said: “we know he was with us when those bikes were presented to the family, because that’s what he would have done.”
