SYRACUSE, N.Y. — An annual tradition in Syracuse's Southside is asking for community support so that more than 6,000 students have backpacks for their first day of school. The Mary Nelson Youth Resource Center's annual Backpack Giveaway is set to take place on Saturday, but the center is short on supplies. Organizer Mary Nelson said originally 3,500 students registered for the giveaway, but now just days later, that number has nearly doubled to 6,000 students.
