    Memphis holds on at Temple to win 84-77

    Penny Hardaway told the Memphis Tigers Radio Network after Thursday's win at Temple, "We're just trying to find 5-7 guys now. No more playing everybody." Hardaway played 10 guys Thursday as Memphis held on to win 84-77 in Philadelphia against a pitiful Temple Owls that had only won one conference game coming into their matchup against the Tigers.

    Memphis was outscored 50-39 in the second half. Five Temple players scored in double figures including Jahlil White with 20 points and 8 rebounds for the Owls. Memphis was led once again my David Jones with a double-double 23 points and 10 rebounds.

    Tigers Earn 84-77 Road Win Over Owls

    PHILADELPHIA – The University of Memphis men's basketball team went on the road and hung on to defeat American Athletic Conference opponent Temple, 84-77, Thursday night inside the Liacouras Center.

    David Jones notched a double-double with a game-high 23 points on 7-of-11 shooting to lead the Tigers offensively (17-6, 6-4 AAC). Jahvon Quinerly added 19 points, six assists and five boards, while Nae’Qwan Tomlin, Nicholas Jourdain and Jonathan Pierre also reached double figures.

    Memphis held a 45-27 halftime lead and shot 48.3-percent as a team (29-of-60) in the win, knocking down 10 triples on 29 attempts (34.5%). The Owls (8-15, 1-9 AAC) rallied back in the second half and pulled to within three points with thirty seconds left in regulation as the Tigers missed six free throws in the final one minute and change.

    The struggles from the line plagued the Tigers in the second half, where after going 5-of-6 in the first 20 minutes, they knocked down just 11-of-25 after the break.

    Temple was led by Jahlil White 's 20 points offensively and shot 41.7-percent as a team as it dropped its eighth-consecutive game.

    Memphis used the starting lineup of Jahvon Quinerly , David Jones , Jaykwon Walton , Nae’Qwan Tomlin and Nicholas Jourdain for the first time this season.It is the sixth different starting lineup for the Tigers this season and the third-straight game with a new five. Penny Hardaway improved to 6-1 all-time against Temple.Memphis led 45-27 at the half after shooting 55 percent from the floor (17-31).The Tigers had 11 assists, six steals and six three-pointers in the first 20 minutes.The 23-point advantage in the first half was the 3 rd -largest lead of the season.With 10 makes from long distance, the Tigers recorded their seventh game of the year with double-digit threes. David Jones earned his fifth double-double of the season with 23 points, 10 rebounds, six steals and four assists in 31 minutes.He recorded 20-plus points for the 14 th time this season, which leads the conference. Jahvon Quinerly scored 15 of his 19 points in the first half and played a team high 38 minutes.With six assists, he recorded his 12 th game of the year with at least five dimes, matching his season total from 2022-23 at Alabama. Nae’Qwan Tomlin finished with 11 points, five rebounds and two blocks.He drew his third-straight start and played 27 minutes before fouling out. Nicholas Jourdain matched David Jones with a team-high 13 plus/minus in the game.He added three rebounds, two assists, two steals and 10 points in his return to Temple in 29 minutes. Jonathan Pierre poured in a career high 10 points after knocking down three triples.Memphis outscored Temple 38-32 in the paint.The Tigers assisted 17 times on 29 field goal makes.Memphis scored 22 points off 18 Owl turnovers.There were two ties and two lead changes in the contest.
