Jones, Quinerly Earn Spots on AAC All-Conference Teams

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis senior forward David Jones and fifth-year point guard Jahvon Quinerly earned spots on the 2023-24 All-American Athletic Conference teams, the league office announced Tuesday. The official AAC awards are selected by the league’s head coaches, and the coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players.

Jones earned All-AAC First Team honors, while Quinerly garnered a spot on the All-AAC Third Team.

Jones has had an All-American season thus far, averaging 21.7 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game. He is on track to becoming the first Division I player since Zion Williamson in 2018-19 to average those numbers in a season.

He leads the league in scoring and total field goal makes (215), while ranking second in steals per game, free throws made (169) and double-doubles (10). In total, he ranks top-2 in seven AAC statistics and top-5 in 14.

The only Tiger to start all 31 games this season, Jones has posted career-high numbers across the board, including marks of 46.0 percent from the floor (215-467) and a 37.9 percent from long range (75-198). He also leads the team with an 80.1-percent clip at the free throw line (169-211).

The Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native has scored 674 points this season, which currently ranks eighth on Memphis’ single-season chart. He is 88 points shy of Dajuan Wagner ’s program record 762 points in 2001-02.

Jones brought home the AAC Player of the Week and Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week in December and is a six-time AAC Weekly Honor Roll selection. Last week, he was one of the five finalists for the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award.

He has scored in double figures in all 31 games, topping the 20-point mark 18 times and reaching 30 points on four occasions.

Quinerly is on the all-conference third team at the end of the year after being picked to the first team in the preseason.

As the floor general for the Tigers, he has started 30-of-31 games and posted career-high numbers in almost every category, averaging 13.7 points, 5.0 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game in a team-high 32.6 minutes each time out.

The Hackensack, New Jersey product is fourth in the league in assists per game, total assists (154) and assists/turnover ratio (2.14).

Quinerly is shooting 41.4 percent overall (137-331) from the field and has hit a career-high 57 three-pointers. The fifth-year senior is second on the team at the free throw line, connecting on 94-of-118 attempts for a 79.7-percent clip.

He is a two-time AAC Weekly Honor Roll recipient and was named the league’s player of the week on January 15 after posted 24.0 points and 7.5 assists per game in wins over UTSA and Wichita State. That honor came on the heels of hitting back-to-game game-winning triples in the final four seconds at Tulsa (Jan. 4) and against SMU (Jan. 7) in the first week of conference action.

Quinerly has scored double figures in 22 games, including five games of 20 or more points, and dished five or more assists 17 times.
