MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Mississippi mom says she is emotionally scarred after being carjacked by a group with guns at a Whitehaven apartment complex last week.

Laquita Mosby stopped to pick up a co-worker early Wednesday morning when she was approached by four masked men who all pointed weapons at her and forced her out of her vehicle.

“I opened up my door. I’m not sure if they said anything to me. I immediately got out of the car and said you can have it,” Mosby said. “I’m terrified. I don’t know if I will live to see the next minute. I don’t know if I’m going to get to see my children again, my husband again, my family again.”

Mosby said the carjackers were still pointing their guns at her as they drove off in her 2020 Honda Civic.

“By this time, my friend had opened her door, and I went in, and of course, I’m hysterical, very, very hysterical. I’m crying, and she called the police,” Mosby said.

Mosby’s family members spotted the Honda Civic at different times that day in Whitehaven. Within hours, police recovered the car on Dunn Avenue in East Memphis and took the driver into custody.

Investigators said K’vion Murphy, 18, bailed out of the vehicle and was found hiding underneath a shed.

Officers said video cameras from their squad cars showed while they were chasing Murphy, a second male removed a gun from the Civic, and they found the Smith & Wesson in a house in the 3700 block of Dunn.

Mosby said she was relieved police found her car so quickly, but is now afraid to drive anywhere alone.

“I have to take pain medicines to go to sleep. I cannot unsee what happened. I can visualize those four individuals pointing guns at me,” she said. “I’m terrified now.”

Hoverboard robbery leads to shootout, police say

Mosby said making matters worse, she found out Murphy was arrested for a similar crime in December and released from jail with bond.

Court records show Murphy was charged with aggravated robbery after a man was held up at gunpoint in the 4400 block of Macon Road.

The victim told police two armed men took his wallet, a third man took his Ford 500, and one of them fired a shot at him. Investigators said Murphy was arrested two weeks later when they found him in the driver’s seat of the stolen truck.

“They fail us. They are failing us,” Mosby said. “You let a person out for carjacking someone. You get out and do the exact thing. The exact same thing. What is your point? What do you think he is gonna do? The right thing? Like, that’s not logic.”

This time, Murphy was charged with carjacking, theft of property, and employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, and his bond was set at $100,000. Mosby wants to make sure he stays locked up.

“I’ll be at every court hearing. He should not have a bond at all,” she said.

Murphy is scheduled to appear in court again on June 27. Police are still searching for the other suspects.
