Tom Lee Park gets another award; Bishop closes temporarily

By Mark Russell, Memphis Commercial Appeal,

Good morning, Memphis, on this extended Fourth of July weekend!

This is Executive Editor Mark Russell, and you're reading the Daily Briefing, our one-stop digital shop for the best Memphis stories from our award-winning Commercial Appeal team.

The awards just keep coming. The newly redesigned Tom Lee Park has snagged another top honor, this time from Fast Company Magazine .

Named one of the magazine's top three finalists for the World Changing Ideas Award, the accolade is the latest one bestowed upon the city's primary hub of interconnected riverfront parks in Downtown Memphis among international submissions, Micaela Watts reports in this story.

The award, according to Fast Company, is meant to shine a light on efforts that encapsulate "innovation and ingenuity necessary to make the world more accessible, equitable and sustainable for everyone.”

Bishop's next move: You are probably still working on the leftovers from the burgers, hot dogs and assorted smoked meats from the Fourth. And, if you need a break from the grill to go to a restaurant, you need to hurry if you want to visit Bishop, the French-themed place started by Andy Ticer and Michael Hudman.

On Wednesday, Bishop , located at 545 S. Main St. in Central Station Hotel, announced it would be closing on Sunday, July 7. The closure will be temporary as Central Station rolls out a new restaurant concept in the ground-floor space, Neil Strebig reports in this story.

In an announcement on Bishop's Facebook page, McLean Wilson of Kemmons Wilson Companies said:

“Though it’s bittersweet to close Bishop, we’re pumped about evolving our world-class dining and cocktail programs with an awesome new concept. Huge thanks to Andy Ticer, Michael Hudman, the South Main Arts District, and all of Memphis for the love and support. Your encouragement fuels our journey into this next chapter.”

It's not hot in here : From films fighting for United States independence to punching aliens in the face to blowing up sharks, movies centered around the Fourth of July have a variety of themes to keep you entertained all day long.

It was hot on Independence Day , so a movie marathon might just what you need to cool off this weekend. And if you want to keep up with the patriotic theme of Independence Day weekend, we've got movies to keep you, and any guest you have, entertained through the hottest parts of the days.

There's no real scientific method for which movies made the list (most are just what the article's author watches around July 4), but it should be good enough to keep you entertained, Joyce Orlando reports in this story. My personal favorite is the Will Smith movie "Independence Day."

The AAC commish speaks : Tim Pernetti has a lot on his mind.

The new American Athletic Conference commissioner has been on the job for one month. He took over for Mike Aresco, who had been the AAC commissioner since the conference's inception in 2013, Jonah Dylan reports in this story.

But Aresco retired earlier this year. Pernetti said his main priority is "alignment" and making sure everyone in the conference is on the same page. He said he plans to visit AAC campuses throughout the summer and into the start of football season.

"Getting everybody on the same page is 50 percent of the battle in collegiate athletics," he said. "If you get everybody on the same page, there's no saying what you can do."
