Gagliano Brothers to Introduce New Event Venue and Speakeasy in Midtown

A family of restaurateurs is set to introduce a new concept in Midtown .

Memphis Business Journal reports that brothers John-Paul , Mario , and Armando Gagliano —owners of Libro , Tonica , and Ecco —have acquired the space next to Ecco at 1581 Overton Park Ave , formerly Diane’s Art, Gift & Home.

They plan to transform the store into an event venue and speakeasy, while also providing additional seating for the often-packed Ecco on Fridays and Saturdays. This expansion is seen as a natural extension of Ecco.

The trio had long considered the Diane’s space due to its proximity to Ecco, so when it became available, they jumped on the opportunity. Their vision includes expanding the kitchen and installing a 22-foot bar, a significant upgrade from Ecco’s current cozy setup.

John-Paul told What Now Memphis that customers, businesses, and vendors frequently request to use Ecco for parties and meetings. Having a dedicated rental venue will meet this demand.

“With the expansion, we will be able to still operate normal hours of operation while accommodating larger parties next door,” he explained.

When not in use for events or additional Ecco seating, the space will transform into a speakeasy—a retro-style spot ideal for relaxing with a glass of wine or cocktail. The ambiance will mirror Ecco’s casual fine dining atmosphere, with low lighting and table/lounge areas.

“With a bigger bar and more floor area to work with, we will also be incorporating table service along with couches/chairs and areas to gather to have a cocktail or a glass of wine and cheese plate for customers wanting to have more of a lounge feel,” added John-Paul.

The Gaglianos’ mother, Sabine Bachmann , founded Libro, Tonica, and Ecco; she is now semi-retired and resides in Italy. The brothers are organizing LLCs for their restaurants under a holding company called Arjosama , derived from the first two letters of each of their names.

John-Paul told What Now Memphis that they’re expecting an October 2024 grand opening, contingent on approvals from the city and Health Department.
