The election for General Sessions Court Clerk will be the only county-wide ballot measure for 2024. Incumbent Joe Brown lost the Democratic primary to Tami Sawyer earlier this year. Lisa Arnold was the sole Republican to meet the qualifying requirements and is the Republican nominee on the Aug. 1 ballot.

The General Sessions Court Clerk is responsible for keeping records and keeping track of funds for both the civil and criminal court divisions.

    Tami Sawyer

Sawyer is the Democratic nominee for the position. Sawyer is a local politician, who has run for state representative and Memphis mayor unsuccessfully but won her election to the Shelby County Commission in 2018.

Sawyer said she wants to enhance innovation through technology, improve customer service for judges, attorneys, and civilians, and engage with members of the Shelby County community if elected to the role.

    Lisa Arnold

Lisa Arnold is the Republican nominee for the position; this is her first run for public office. Arnold worked within the General Sessions Court and Criminal Court offices for 33 years.

Arnold said she has worked within the court system for her entire career and wants to make customer service a priority in the courts.
