Incumbent Althea Greene, who is also the current board chair, has two challengers this election cycle.

    Ernest Gillespie III

A longtime pastor who formerly worked for MSCS, Gillespie also has a background in law enforcement and private security. If elected, he said one priority would be to work closely with legislators in Nashville to secure additional funding for the district's massive deferred maintenance list.

    Althea Greene (incumbent)

A longtime educator and pastor, Greene is seeking her second full term representing District 2 on the school board. She has been adamantly opposed to school vouchers and has floated the idea of additional reading assistants or after-school tutors to help boost reading levels among students.

    Natalie McKinney

McKinney, the executive director and co-founder of Whole Child Strategies Inc, has a background in law and for a decade worked as director of policy for legacy Memphis City Schools and then Shelby County Schools (now MSCS). She said comprehensive strategic plans were needed to improve literacy across grade bands, but also a fiscal plan to keep those plans operational in school years to come.
