Memphis is under an excessive heat warning in effect from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday with dangerously hot conditions and heat index values up to 110 degrees expected.

The National Weather Service wrote in the forecaster's discussion , "Oppressive heat and humidity will affect the Mid-South again today. Temperatures are poised to climb into the mid/upper 90s with dewpoints in the mid 70s, resulting in maximum heat indices from 105-112F. Cooler conditions are anticipated for the end of the week with highs in the 80s."

The weather service warns that heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity.

What to do during extreme heat?

The weather service recommends people drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors.

    Other recommendations:

    • Take extra precautions when outside.
    • Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing.
    • Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
    • Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

    Heat stroke vs heat exhaustion

On X, formerly known as Twitter, the National Weather Service posted about the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Though the names are similar, some of the symptoms are different and need different responses.

When a person has heat exhaustion, there will be excessive sweating, cool and clammy skin, muscle cramps and a weak pulse. When a person is suffering from heat stroke, there is no sweating, a strong pulse, dry skin and the chance of losing consciousness.

A person suffering from heat stroke should be taken to the hospital while a person with heat exhaustion can be cooled down.

    What is a heat index?

According to the National Weather Service , heat index is, "what the temperature feels like to the human body when relative humidity is combined with the air temperature." Essentially, the heat index is what it feels like outside rather than what the degree is which is why it often feels much hotter outside than the temperature actually is.

Extreme caution should be exercised when the heat index is over 90 degrees. The heat index is considered dangerous when it is over 105 degrees.
