MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The woman charged with the murder of a Church’s Chicken worker earlier this month was back in court for the third time Monday morning.

A judge was set to decide the amount Monica Williams would have to pay in order to bond out of jail, however, the 45-year-old along with her defense team waived their right to a bond hearing.

Williams’ attorney Scott Hall says the delay will give them more time to build their defense.

“We are currently speaking with people and we have investigators talking to the witnesses and trying to develop a defense in this matter,” Hall said.

Williams is accused of shooting to death, Anitra West, at the beginning of July while she was working at Church’s Chicken in Orange Mound.

Halls says it’s what happened after the shooting that he wants the court to take into consideration when it comes time to decide on bond.

“She turned herself in. She was not captured by police, she made the voluntary move to turn herself into the system,” Hall said. “Just because a warrant is issued, it doesn’t have a bearing on whether you are innocent or guilty.”

A preliminary hearing is set for August 20 to determine if there is enough evidence for the case to go to trial.
