MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two men were arrested after a high-speed pursuit of a stolen vehicle in West Memphis led into Memphis Saturday night, Arkansas State Police said.
At around 11:36 p.m., officers responded to a black 2021 Ford Mustang driving recklessly and nearly causing collisions.
Police say the driver of the Ford Mustang led police on a pursuit through the intersection of Broadway Boulevard and Martin Luther King Drive.
The chase continued with the suspect’s car reaching reported speeds of over 100 mph.
Troopers were able to end the chase when the vehicle approached the intersection of the I-55 North Service Road and MLK. Troopers performed a tactical vehicle intervention, causing the Mustang to spin off the road.
“It’s absolutely not safe for our troopers to perform these techniques. But they’ve sworn an oath to protect the public. So they put themselves between the public and the fleeing suspect. You’re attempting to make it spin out. And most of the time during the spin, the suspect vehicle will stall out,” said Lt. Colonel Mike Kennedy, training for Arkansas State Police.
Both suspects got out of the car and fled on foot into a grassy field. The troopers secured the area and found the two suspects.
ASP says they found a loaded black handgun, multiple vehicle fobs, a vehicle key programming device, and narcotics. The suspect vehicle and the seized handgun had been reported as stolen.
“The idea that, you know, we’re just being cowboys, and we’re going to chase them until, you know, this thing concludes, that’s not true,” Colonel Mike Hagar, head of ASP said.
But ASP is clear that suspects trying to get away.. will be stopped and the consequences will be severe.
Kyle Cunningham, 23, has been charged with multiple felony counts, including Possession of Firearms by a Certain Person, Fleeing, Theft by Receiving, and Criminal Conspiracy, along with other charges.
Tre’Von Burnett, 23, has been charged with felony Theft by Receiving and Criminal Conspiracy, among other charges.
“We’re constantly on the lookout for ways to make these situations safer. But at the end of the day, the way to make it safer is to stop running, you know, and that’s our message to the public is just stop running. It’s absolutely not worth it,” Hagar said.
They were arrested and transported to the Crittenden County Detention Center.
