MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police are investigating two back-to-back shootings that happened less than a mile apart Wednesday morning in Orange Mound.

Police say a man involved in one of the shootings is now on the run after breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment and shooting another man in the chest.

Around 1:30 a.m. officers say they responded to the Pendelton Place Apartments regarding the shooting.

A woman told police that her ex-boyfriend kicked down her door, and ran to her bedroom where she was with her 4-month-old and another man. That’s when her ex-boyfriend started fighting with the victim, then pulled out a gun and shot him.

She claims her ex-boyfriend believes the victim recently robbed her at gunpoint.

“Right now nobody feels safe in Memphis,” said Dr. Bill Adkins, Greater Imani Church Pastor.

It’s a shift in crime for the area that Pastor Adkins says contradicts its rich history.

“There is a lot of danger out there and we know it and It affects every community,” Pastor Adkins said. “There is no particular neighbor where you can consider yourself safe.”

The second shooting happened around 4 a.m. where officers a man was found grazed by a bullet on Marianna Street. MPD says that the shooting happened at Carnes Avenue and Pendleton Street.

“Once regarded as one of the greatest AA communities in the entire United States, something to be very proud of. Many leaders have come from Orange Mound now we are looking at a situation where it’s full and ripe with crime,” Adkins said. “We have no choice but to go out and find ways to rid the city of gun violence by getting the guns from the people who shouldn’t have the guns.”
