On July 14, Memphis Police responded to a shooting at the Economy Inn at 3896 Lamar Ave. When they arrived, they found a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound in the lower abdomen.

When an officer asked him who shot him, he only replied, “The one with the dreads.”

Officers reviewed the hotel’s security video and the victim was seen walking from the second-story stairwell with two armed men. One man dressed in a yellow traffic vest was armed with a black handgun, the second was a man with long dreadlocks and was carrying what appeared to be an AR-15.

Moments after the suspects were seen walking from the stairwell, the armed men were captured on camera running from the scene.

Officers found three .223 shell casings in the hallway near the shooting victim.

On Thursday, the manager of the Economy Inn positively identified Kendall Briggs as the person seen in the security footage running from the scene carrying an AR-15 rifle.

On Friday, at approximately 11:20 a.m., investigators received information from the hotel staff that Briggs had just left the Economy Inn parking lot in a gray Honda Accord with Mississippi tags.

At approximately 11:50 a.m., an officer saw Briggs sitting in the driver’s seat of the Honda Accord in front of the Sunco located at 2726 S. Perkins.

The officer removed Briggs from the vehicle and in the police report, it states that the officer could see a black handgun in the driver’s side floorboard.

Briggs admitted to the investigators to shooting the victim twice after a gunshot was fired “accidentally” during a scuffle between the victim and another man he knows as “Sleepy.”

As of Friday, the victim is in critical condition at Regional One.
