Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies are in the midst of a crucial offseason. After two consecutive seasons of clinching the No. 2 seed in the playoffs, the team looked on its way to becoming a Western Conference powerhouse.

Unfortunately, Morant's controversies, lengthy suspension, and injuries have put a hold on the Grizzlies ' ascent. The team took a significant dip last season, finishing with a 27-55 record and 13th place in the West. The rising star sent a heartfelt message to the organization during his induction into Murray State University's Hall of Fame.

"We all went through that situation together, but y'all holding it down and staying by my side means so much to me and my family," Morant said on the stage . "I appreciate y'all for even coming now, with draft, Summer League, and all. I appreciate y'all, and it shows the love and support y'all have for me. So, just know it's reciprocated."

    The Grizz have Ja's back

When Morant was dealing with his scandals, Memphis probably didn't consider parting ways with its former No. 2 pick. Instead, the franchise stuck with him, hoping that he could learn from his youthful missteps.

The star point guard's brief return in the 2023-24 campaign following his 25-game suspension showed why waiting on Ja is worth it. The Grizz came out on top in his first four appearances last season, and Morant averaged 28.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 8.5 assists per contest.

The former Rookie of the Year ended up playing just nine times last season, though. During one practice session, he sustained a shoulder injury that required a season-ending injury.

    Memphis' return to contention?

Recovering from his tumultuous past and injuries, Morant is likely looking toward helping his team regain its spot near the top of the conference.

He even aired his belief earlier this year that the franchise can win the 2025 championship as long as the players are healthy. The good news for Ja is that reinforcements have come to Memphis.

Marcus Smart arrived via trade in the 2023 offseason, although he also played sparingly in the 2023-24 campaign. If the former Defensive Player of the Year can get a clean bill of health this year, he can provide the squad with leadership, perimeter defense, and toughness. The Grizzlies also drafted intriguing prospect Zach Edey, who could give the team a coveted interior presence.

The bad news, though, is that the competition in the West has gotten tougher since Memphis' consecutive runs to the second seed. However, an inspired Morant, fresh off an induction into his beloved alma mater's Hall of Fame, could give the organization a needed lift.
