Unrestored 1934 Bugatti Type 59 Wins Best of Show at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

For 2024, first place was awarded to a 1934 Bugatti Type 59 Sports, a factory race car that won numerous Grand Prix victories throughout the 1930s. Behind its steering wheel sat legendary drivers such as René Dreyfus and Jean-Pierre Wimille. After its racing career, the car was acquired by King Leopold III of Belgium, who personalized it with his signature black and yellow livery. Beyond its historical significance, the Type 59 Sports also packed incredible performance figures for the time. Under the hood lay an unconventional by today’s standards 3.3-litre supercharged inline 8-cylinder that produced roughly 250 horsepower. The straight 8 put power down through a 4-speed manual transmission and pushed the 1650-pound Bugatti to a top speed of 135mph.

    Patina Is King

The win for the Bugatti Type 59 is particularly historic because it marks the first time a preservation car (one that has been maintained in its original condition rather than being restored) has won at Pebble Beach. In a world where pristine restorations often come on top, this win celebrates the beauty of a car that has been used as intended. Sometimes, vehicles restored to absolute perfection collide with the idea of using the machine. As preservation cars continue to gain recognition, we may see more vehicles being honoured for proudly wearing their history.

A Crown Fit for a King: The Rolex 1908

Being such a prestigious event, the winner takes home a prestigious prize. Fritz Burkard received a Rolex 1908. The watch itself reflects the elegance, craftsmanship and engineering excellence of the Bugatti. Inspired by a vintage model from 1931, it blends Rolex’s history while incorporating contemporary refinements. The 1908’s mechanical movement offers a 66-hour power reserve and is visible through the sapphire caseback. On the outside, a 39mm case is available in 18k gold or white gold.

The connection between Rolex and motorsports runs deep, with the brand being a long-time partner of some of the world's most important automotive events. This relationship dates back to the 1930s when British racer Sir Malcolm Cambell wore a Rolex Oyster as he set multiple land speed records. Rolex has also been the official timekeeper of the 24 Hours of Le Mans since 2001, the title sponsor of 24 Hours at Daytona, and became the Global Partner and Official Timekeeper of Formula 1 in 2013

At Pebble Beach, Rolex once again serves as the official timekeeper and fitting partner. The brand’s attention to detail and prestige complement the event’s status, underscoring the significance of each participating vehicle

    Conclusion

The 2024 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance could be characterised as one of the most significant ever. The victory of the 1934 Bugatti Type 59 Sports as an untouched relic from the past emphasises a shift towards the appreciation of authenticity and the beauty of a car’s true story. In a way, this makes the vehicle feel more human as it wears its battle scars with pride rather than hiding them under perfect paint. The Rolex 1908 awarded to the Best of Show winner is not just a timepiece but a symbol of timeless elegance, making it the perfect match for the Bugatti. As Pebble Beach moves through another year of celebrating the finest automobiles, it remains a testament to the enduring love of classic cars and the art of watchmaking.
