Fancy owning the former home of a rock-and-roll legend ? Then come “Truckin’” on over to Mendocino, California, where you can buy a seaside spread once owned by Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann. The musician , who played with the band for its entire 30-year run, from 1965 to 1995, sold the home in 2001 to a California-based family.

“When my parents bought the home, it was a two-bedroom, one-bath coastal hangout,” says Brian Temple, the current owner of the home. “While the home had plenty of charm and intrigue, my dad saw the future potential for the site. There was a vacant lot next door, which my parents promptly purchased, and over the course of ten years, they worked on their dream project. Ultimately, they remodeled and expanded the original home, built a second home next door, and later connected the two via a skybridge. It is the most beautiful spot I know.”

A whimsical light fixture animates the relaxed, open-plan living space.

While it has been on and off the market for several years with price reductions along the way, it is now currently listed for $4 million by Jim Eldridge of Mendo Sotheby’s International Realty. The two homes sit on five contiguous acres and are being listed together but have separate addresses. Together, the homes span about 6,200 square feet, with a total of four bedrooms and four bathrooms. Each of the self-contained structures has its own chef’s kitchen and living and dining areas, but they are connected via an enclosed walkway, an ideal set up as a multi-generational compound or vacation home for those who love to entertain guests but also like to maintain a bit of privacy.

Completed in 2010, the homes are situated atop a bluff on the edge of a steep, rocky coastline. The incredible setting allows for panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Mendocino Village.

The bluff-top location makes for spectacular ocean and coastline views.

The wood-clad home at the north end of the property blends laid-back California cool with rustic design. The shingle-style home is crafted from wood and stone, with vaulted wood-beamed ceilings and a fireplace set into a hand-stacked stone wall. Oversized windows offer uninterrupted ocean views, and to maximize the connection to the outdoors, the open-plan living space connects to an ocean-facing terrace that runs the length of the home.

Charming and understated, there are two en suite bedrooms in each house, with the opportunity to transform the bonus rooms into additional bedrooms or hobby spaces. Other highlights found throughout the home and property include a games room, a three-car garage, an elevator in the south house, and terraces on the upper level with even more fabulous ocean views. Just three hours from Silicon Valley, it is a quaint coastal escape with nearby access to Mendocino Village.

The allure of this property lies in the outdoor areas. The fenced property has a large manicured lawn space, pristine landscaping, and many outdoor terraces. There are also walking paths along the bluff and nearby access to the beach below.
