Axtell scores 1,000th career point as Maroon girls throttle Carney-Nadeau

    2024-02-28

CARNEY — Only four girls in the history of Menominee High School basketball have reached the 1,000-point milestone.

With 8.2 seconds remaining in the third quarter of Tuesday’s season finale against Carney-Nadeau, Anna Axtell became the fifth.

Axtell’s breakaway layup put Menominee on top 41-33 and vaulted the senior guard into the record books, as the Maroons cruised past the Wolves with a strong closing stretch to notch a 57-39 non-conference victory over Carney-Nadeau.

Axtell scored a game-high 26 points in her history-making performance. She joins Heather Nelson, Korry Schwanz, LaRae Kostreva and Emma Anderson as the only Maroon girls to score 1,000 career points.

Axtell is also the just the 13 player in Menominee history to join the 1K-point club, boys or girls.

Just for good measure, Axtell also broke the record (83) for most steals in a single season.

Tuesday’s contest was a tit-for-tat affair that saw the lead change hands four times in the first quarter alone, as the two teams battled to a 12-12 deadlock.

Carney-Nadeau (15-6) grabbed a two-point lead late in the second quarter thanks to a bucket by Mariska Laurila, but Kam Olson knocked down a pair of free throws to kickstart a 6-0 run for the Maroons, with Menominee seizing a slim 25-24 advantage at halftime.

The Wolves managed to retake a two-point edge in the third quarter before Alexa Axtell scored to ignite a 13-0 run that Anna Axtell capped off with her historic layup.

Menominee stayed hot offensively in the fourth quarter, outscoring C-N by a 16-6 margin, to close out the game.

Gianna Coduti pitched in nine points for the Maroons. Olson and Ava Chouinard both added six, Lexi Marineau collected five, Mady Barker finished with three, and Alexa Axtell chipped in two.

Grace Maule paced the Wolves with 10 points. Laurila was close behind with nine while Kelsie Smith tallied eight.

The Maroons wrap up the regular season at 12-10 overall and 4-4 in the Great Northern Conference.
