    Maroon girls have Emeralds seeing red in District playoff opener

    MANISTIQUE, Mich. — Anna Axtell outscored the entire Manistique girls basketball team by herself as the Menominee Maroons pummeled Manistique 50-29 in Monday’s MHSAA Division 3 District 66 playoff opener.

    Axtell erupted for 34 points, including 18 points in a monster second quarter that saw the Maroons outscore the Emeralds by an 18-5 margin to take a commanding 30-13 lead at halftime.

    Manistique (7-14) attempted to claw its way back in the second half, outscoring the Maroons 12-8 to pull within 13, but the Emeralds managed to sink just one field goal the entire fourth quarter.

    Menominee (13-10) closed strong, ripping off 10 unanswered points to start the final frame before outpacing Manistique 12-4.

    The Maroons advance to the District semifinals tonight. Menominee travels to Harbor Springs (20-2) for a 5 p.m. tipoff.

    Lexi Marineau pitched in eight points for Menominee on Monday. Gianna Coduti added six and Mackenzie Doyle finished with two.

    Leah Goudreau was the Emeralds’ top scorer with 10 points. Danielle Lund chipped in eight, Maya Carlson tallied seven, while Kyra Carlson and JoLynn Zellar both contributed two.
