    Maroon girls fall to Harbor Springs in District semifinal

    HARBOR SPRINGS, Mich. — Despite a valiant comeback effort, the season is over for the Menominee girls basketball team after the Maroons were bounced from the MHSAA Division 3, District 66 semifinals 66-56 by Harbor Springs on Wednesday.

    Harbor Springs (21-2) led by as much as 20 points midway through the third quarter before the Maroons (13-11) reeled off seven unanswered points to cut the Rams’ lead down to 13 entering the fourth quarter.

    Menominee was able to make it a nine-point affair thanks to a bucket from Anna Axtell with 2:49 left to play, but the Rams responded by knocking down five of their six free throws over the final eighty seconds to seal the victory.

    Menominee stunned Harbor Springs with a quick 7-to-2 flurry to kick off Wednesday’s action before a 3-pointer from Olivia Flynn lifted the Rams ahead 10-7.

    Harbor Springs never trailed again, taking a 17-15 advantage at the end of the first quarter before outscoring the Maroons 20-11 in the second half to seize a 37-26 cushion at halftime.

    Axtell was Menominee’s leading scorer with 16 points. Gianna Coduti pitched in 11, Kam Olson added 10, Ava Chouinard finished with eight, while Lexi Marineau and Alexa Axtell both chipped in five.

    Flynn led all scorers with a game-high 31 points. Stefi Reskevics tallied 10, Sophie Barnadyn and Bryleigh Rummer each collected eight and Paige Keiser picked up six.
