Maroon girls mash five homers in doubleheader sweep of Kingsford

KINGSFORD — Good teams are able to win in a variety of ways, which the Menominee High School softball team proved in a doubleheader sweep of Kingsford on Monday.

Menominee rode its offense to a 12-9 triumph over the Flivvers, while pitching and defense propelled the Maroons to a 3-0 shutout.

Kayden Olsen clubbed a home run while Mady Barker and Kam Olson both scored for Menominee in game one.

Olson pitched seven innings and limited the Flivvers to a mere four hits. She issued one walk and struck out eight.

Menominee also proved to be adept at shootouts in the nightcap, out-hitting Kingsford 16-13.

Kingford jumped ahead 5-2 through the first four innings before the Maroons exploded four eight runs in the top of the fifth to seize a five-run advantage.

Menominee added a pair of insurance runs in its half of the sixth before the Flivvers scratched three runs across in the bottom of the inning to pull within three, but the Maroons held Kingsford scoreless in the bottom of the seventh to seal the victory.

Mady Barker belted a pair of homers while Olsen and Ella Barker also went yard as part of the Maroons’ offensive onslaught.

The Maroons also proved to be speed merchants on the basepaths, with Elena Murphy swapping four bags, while Phoebe Barrette, Ava Johnson and Alyssa Graves all collected stolen bases.

Ella Barker pitched game two and picked up the win after allowing 13 hits, nine runs (eight earned) and three walks to go with four strikeouts over seven innings of work.

Due upMenominee: The Maroons are at Gladstone today (Wednesday) beginning at noon. Menominee hosts Marquette in a doubleheader on Thursday, with game one getting underway at 3:30 p.m., before closing out the week at home against Stephenson on Friday at 4 p.m.
