Flivvers frustrate Maroons on Senior Night

    2024-05-23

MENOMINEE — Kingsford played the role of spoiler on Senior Night for the Menominee High School baseball team, as the Flivvers knocked off the Maroons 8-1 on Wednesday.

Gavin Grondin held Menominee to four hits on the mound after taking over for Gavin Trevillian, who left the game after tossing just four pitches.

Dylan Beal worked a one-out walk in the bottom of the second inning but was the Maroons’ lone baserunner until Torin Davis broke through with a single to lead off Menominee’s half of the fourth inning.

Davis swiped second base to move into scoring position before scoring thanks to a sacrifice fly from Robert Finger, which cut into Kingsford’s lead 7-1.

Kingsford tacked on one final run in the top sixth after Garrett Brown scored on an error.

Menominee attempted to mount comeback bids in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, with Landan Bardowski leading off the sixth with a single before moving into scoring position after stealing second.

However, the Maroons were unable to bring Bardowski home after Davis and Finger both struck out looking, while Carlson lined out to shortstop to end the scoring threat.

Menominee managed to get two runners into scoring position in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, but Cyle Kenny and Drew Olson both went down looking to end the game in deflating fashion for the Maroons.

Gable Buck was the losing pitcher on Wednesday. The senior tossed six-and-two-thirds innings in his final home game, giving up five hits, four walks and eight runs (three earned) to go with three strikeouts.

Wednesday was also the final home game for seniors Bardowski, Davis and Kenny.

Bardowski and Davis both went 1-for-3 at the plate with a stolen base, with Davis adding a run scored. Buck went 0-2 with a walk, while Kenny was hitless in three trips to the dish.

Beal went 1-2 with a walk and Carlson was 1-3.
