MENOMINEE — There are only three things certain in life: Death, taxes and the Menominee girls’ 4x400 relay team taking first place.

Fran Mellinger Track at Menominee High School played host to the Great Northern Conference track and field championships on Thursday, and Gianna Coduti, Lexi Marineau, Emily Schuettpeltz and Erin Schuettpeltz continued their dominance in the 1,600-meter relay.

The Menominee quartet won the event in 4:22.72, the fifth time the Lady Maroons have accomplished the feat this season. The two times they did not win the event, they placed second.

The Maroons’ continued reign over the 1,600m relay wasn’t the only impressive feat that Menominee accomplished on Thursday.

Darrent Butler won the GNC title in the boys’ high jump with a new personal-best leap of six feet, four inches. Thursday marked Butler’s fifth consecutive win in the event dating back to May 7.

Erika Peterson collected another first-place finish for Menominee after topping the discus with a heave of 88’ 9.25”. Peterson also competed in the shot put and finished second overall after notching a toss measuring 28’ 3”.

When all was said and done, Marquette walked away with the boys’ GNC title after accumulating 156 points, while Gladstone captured the girls’ GNC crown with 104.

Kingsford (93) was second on the boys’ side, with Gladstone (60) third and Menominee (39) fourth. Escanaba finished fifth with four points.

Marquette lost out on the girls’ title by 6.5 points and instead settled for second place with 97.5. Esky was third with 67 points, 11 points ahead of the fourth-place Maroons (56) and well ahead of Kingsford, who took fifth with 28.5 points.

The Maroon thinclads picked up 20 top-five finishes and established 21 new personal records.

On the girls’ side, Winley Brandt ran the 3,200m and took second after crossing the finish line in 12:57.52.

Erin Schuettpeltz locked down second place in the 400m dash with a time of 1:03.64 before adding a third-place finish in the high jump (5’ 0”).

Emily Schuettpeltz also partook in the high jump festivities and finished two inches behind her younger sister with a fourth-place height of 4’ 8”.

Richele Milostan competed in the long jump and bounded her way to second place with a leap of 14’ 8”.

Mackenzi Pesola sprinted to fourth place in the 100m dash (14.07) before teaming up with Coduti, and the Schuettpeltz sisters to bring home second place in the 4x200 relay (1:53.22).

Menominee’s strong relay showings continued in the 3,200m, where Brandt, Cortney Buscher, Pashunce Shepard and Reese Sallgren finished in 11:48.04, good for fourth overall.

The Maroon boys also enjoyed success in relay events, with Dawson Bardowski, Maverick Geniesse, Brennan Swanson and Jackson Myszak breaking the tape in 48.07 to finish fourth overall in the 400m.

Bardowski and Myszak then linked up with Caleb Barstow and Nathan Komp to run a fourth-place time of 1:39.83 in the 800m.

Bardowski, Komp and Geniesse, alongside Henry Zuehls seized second place in the 1,600m relay in 3:48.22, while Zuehls and Komp hooked up with Blake Bourion and Brayden Bourion to take second place in the 3,200m (9:10.98).

Brayden Bourion ran the 800m in 2:08.33 to take third place, while Komp’s time of 52.31 in the 400m was good for second overall.

Zander Jurkiewicz picked up Menominee’s final top-five finish with a fifth-place leap of 5’ 8” in the high jump.
